VyprVPN App Not Working on iOS 8…For Now
Update: A fix is now available for VyprVPN for iOS 8. Please read our blog post for instructions.
iOS 8 launched today but unfortunately our VyprVPN for iOS app will not work with iOS 8 and can result in your Internet connectivity being temporarily broken. Although the VyprVPN app is not working, manual setup still works. If you already have a VyprVPN profile installed on your iOS 8 device, please be sure to first delete your VPN profile and then follow the iOS manual setup instructions in our Support section.
Since WWDC, we have been testing with multiple iOS 8 betas, including the Gold Master, to try and provide a solution for this issue. We have also sent multiple bug tickets to Apple, but unfortunately they have not provided an adequate response that will solve for this severe connectivity problem.
Currently, when you upgrade to iOS 8 with a VyprVPN profile installed, VyprVPN will instantly connect. However, when you open the app and attempt to disconnect (or try to disconnect via the Golden Frog Control Panel), our servers will kill your VPN session, but iOS 8 devices will not recognize that the server has killed the session and will still try to send traffic over the VPN. This causes the OS to try to route traffic through a connection that doesn’t exist and will result in your Internet connectivity being temporarily broken. Not good.
As a temporary fix, we’ve released an “update” to our VyprVPN for iOS app that will lock out iOS 8 users and only allow them to log out. This is to prevent users from breaking their Internet connection by trying to disconnect.
You can also safely disconnect VyprVPN by disconnecting the VPN session in the iOS Settings or by waiting for it to time out in about 5-10 minutes.
We will continue waiting for a response from Apple on how they will handle VPN connections and consequentially make VyprVPN available for our iOS 8 users.
